There are many ways to support the Literacy Program’s Trivia Challenge through your donations. You can make a cash donation directly to the Literacy Program, support a team by donating all or part of a $300 registration fee, or make an in-kind donation (such as a raffle prize or media ad). For information, contact literacy@scvolunteercenter.org or 831-427-5077.
The following are a few facts about our students and the impact the Literacy Program has on their families:
- More than 60% of our students are parents, and 78% of our students are women. Besides Basic English Language skills, we teach four targeted programs that we call Life Survival Skills: (1) Emergencies and Safety, (2) Access to Health Care, (3) Nutrition, and (4) Parent/Teacher Interaction.
- The first three programs teach vocabulary that is important for families to stay healthy. Healthy families are more likely to have children who don’t miss school. They are more likely to have parents who are more productive at work, more likely to get promoted, and more likely to reach their full potential as parents and members of the community.
- The fourth module, Parent/Teacher Interaction, teaches vocabulary to help students engage in their child’s education. Parents often say that they want to improve their language skills so that they can assist with their children’s homework and interact with their children’s teacher. Parental reading level is the most highly correlated predictor of a student’s success or failure in school.
We hope you will consider supporting the Literacy Program of Santa Cruz County through a donation to the Trivia Challenge.
A contribution of $300 or more includes mention under Contributors in event program and three complimentary spectator tickets per team. All Sponsors have the option to select their own team members or to have team members selected by the Literacy Program to compete on their behalf. Contact literacy@scvolunteercenter.org or 831-427-5077 if you would like the program to find team members for you.
